I haven’t seen The Host (No not that one out in a few weeks, the Korean monster movie from a few years back.) in a few years but what sticks out in my mind is the humour. Even during what should be scenes of heartbreak and sorrow the film remembers that comic events can happen at any time, despite the genre your film happens to reside in.
Although to tie The Host down to any one genre is difficult. B-movie, family drama, sci-fi, conspiracy thriller, horror… too many horror films these days seem desperate to cling to a super-serious tone throughout. A little bit of humour wouldn’t go amiss and only serves to reel an audience in further.
And if nothing else I get to taint the tag of another, more popular film with the same name.
